TCF IRN or TEF IRN: which test should you choose in 2026?

Par Antonin GAVREL - le dimanche 6 septembre 2026 - 8 min read

Two official tests for the same language requirement

The TCF IRN, administered by France Éducation international, and the TEF IRN, offered by Le français des affaires of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry, both assess French proficiency up to B2 level. For a naturalisation application submitted in 2026, this is the level you must demonstrate in spoken and written French.

The authorities do not favour one test because it is supposedly “more prestigious.” What matters is an acceptable, valid certificate at the required level. Your choice should therefore be based on the format and your profile.

Quick comparison

| Criterion | TCF IRN | TEF IRN | | ----------------- | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------- | | Organisation | France Éducation international | CCI Paris Île-de-France | | Skills | 4 compulsory | 4 compulsory | | Maximum IRN level | B2 | B2 | | Validity | 2 years | 2 years | | Speaking | 3 tasks, face to face | 2 sections, interaction | | Distinctive point | 25 listening + 25 reading MCQs | TEF-specific format and scoring |

Fees, schedules and availability vary between centres. Check them directly in the official directories.

Choose the TCF IRN if…

The TCF may suit you if you like progressive exercises, want to practise with France Éducation international resources and are comfortable with its three expression tasks. Its current format lasts 1 hour 35 minutes, including 20 minutes of listening and 35 minutes of reading.

Try an official sample before booking: the speed of the multiple-choice questions and the way they follow one another may matter as much as your general proficiency.

Choose the TEF IRN if…

The TEF may be appropriate if its interface, task system and two speaking sections feel more natural to you. The speaking component notably asks you to seek information and then help another person make a decision.

The TEF IRN must be taken as a whole in accordance with the organisation's conditions. For B2, examine the thresholds for each component: a weaker performance in one skill remains subject to the rules and cannot be ignored.

Choose a suitable test, then check the certificate

VisaPref helps you incorporate evidence of B2 into a complete and consistent naturalisation application.

There is no easiest test

Online accounts conflict because candidates do not have the same strengths. Someone who works quickly through multiple-choice questions may prefer one format, while another person who is used to persuading others when speaking may feel more comfortable with the other.

Before choosing:

  1. try an official sample from each test;
  2. compare your results in all four skills;
  3. check the available dates near you;
  4. read the cancellation and retake conditions;
  5. leave enough time before applying for naturalisation.

Shared points to remember

A TCF or TEF certificate is valid for two years, unlike certain diplomas. It does not replace the civic exam and does not guarantee naturalisation. The application must still establish residence, professional integration, good character and assimilation.

Check the spelling of your identity as soon as you receive the result. Also check the issue date, the details for each skill and the level actually achieved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine results from two tests?

Do not construct your evidence by freely combining skills from different certificates. Submit evidence that complies with the procedure's rules.

Does a DELF B2 diploma last longer?

The DELF is a diploma, whereas the TCF and TEF issue certificates limited to two years. Nevertheless, check that the diploma submitted falls within the accepted categories.

Should I choose the cheapest centre?

Price matters, but also consider travel, the date, the results timeframe and your familiarity with the format. Choosing the wrong test can cost you a second registration fee.
