TCF IRN 2026: format, B2 level, results and validity

What is the TCF IRN for?
The TCF “Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité” measures the French proficiency of people undertaking the integration pathway or applying for a multi-year residence permit, resident card or naturalisation. Since May 2025, it has assessed candidates up to B2 level, which became the reference level for naturalisation in 2026.
The TCF is a test: it captures your level on a particular date. It is not a qualification awarded permanently.
The four compulsory tests
The current format lasts 1 hour 35 minutes in total:
| Skill | Format | Duration | | ------------------ | ---------------------------- | -------: | | Listening | 25 multiple-choice questions | 20 min | | Reading | 25 multiple-choice questions | 35 min | | Written expression | 3 tasks | 30 min | | Spoken expression | 3 tasks with an examiner | 10 min |
Every skill counts. For naturalisation, prepare for B2 in both written and spoken French. Excellent comprehension does not automatically compensate for insufficient expression.
Listening
You listen to everyday conversations and spoken passages of increasing difficulty. The audio progresses according to the test instructions. Practise identifying the intention, the relationship between the speakers and specific information without translating every word.
Reading
The materials range from everyday messages to more argumentative texts. Read the instructions first and identify the main idea, linking words and the author's viewpoint. With 35 minutes for 25 questions, time management is essential.
Written and spoken expression
The three writing tasks require you to adapt the content and register to a situation. Leave a few minutes to check agreement, verbs and the flow of your ideas.
In the speaking test, you interact face to face with an examiner. You must ask for information, interact and justify a choice. Simple but structured speech is more effective than poorly controlled complex vocabulary.
Your TCF certificate must match your procedure
VisaPref checks the level, validity and consistency of your supporting evidence before you apply for naturalisation.
Results and validity
France Éducation international states that results are sent to the centre approximately 15 working days after it receives the session materials. The centre then gives the certificate to the candidate.
The certificate is valid for two years from the date the results are issued. The expiry date appears on the document. Keep the original and a digital copy: depending on the organisation's procedures, only one copy may be issued.
How to plan your preparation
Take a placement test, then allocate your study time according to your weaknesses. Over six weeks, plan at least:
- two comprehension sessions per week;
- one timed writing task with corrections;
- one recorded speaking simulation;
- one grammar session focusing on your errors;
- one complete mock test every two weeks.
TCF IRN and the civic exam
The TCF IRN does not assess French history, culture or society. This knowledge is covered by a separate civic exam. For naturalisation in 2026, therefore, plan for three components: evidence of B2, a civic exam certificate and an interview at the prefecture.
Frequently asked questions
Can you retake the TCF IRN?
Yes, subject to the organisation's rules and waiting periods for registering again. Schedule your first test early enough to leave yourself a fallback option.
Is a B1 result still sufficient for an application submitted in 2026?
The statutory level for naturalisation is now B2. A certificate limited to B1 does not demonstrate this level.
Is the TCF IRN preferable to the TEF IRN?
Both can meet the requirement if they are valid and demonstrate the required level. The best choice depends primarily on which format suits you.
