Civic exam scenarios: how to answer

Par Antonin GAVREL - le dimanche 13 septembre 2026 - 7 min read

Why this section requires different preparation

Of the civic exam’s 40 questions, 12 are scenarios. Unlike the 28 knowledge questions, they are not published by the Ministry. There is therefore no point looking for a “secret list”: you need to learn how to reason from the values, rights and rules of life in France.

A scenario may take place at work, at school, within a family, in housing or in a public service. Four reactions are proposed. The correct answer is the one that respects the law, the principles of the Republic and the rights of others.

The four-question method

1. What is the real issue?

Look for words that indicate discrimination, violence, an infringement of freedom, a secularism issue, compulsory education or an administrative procedure.

2. Which principle applies?

Mentally name the rule: equality between women and men, non-discrimination, freedom of conscience, compliance with the law, child protection, professional confidentiality or access to public services.

3. Which response provides protection without taking the law into your own hands?

Eliminate violent, humiliating or unlawful options. The right response often involves dialogue, a manager, an authority or an established appeal procedure.

4. Does the answer also respect other people?

A freedom does not authorise you to endanger someone else or deprive them of their rights. Be wary of statements expressed in absolute terms: “always”, “never” or “without any limit”.

Practice examples

These examples are educational and do not reproduce official questions.

At work, a colleague is excluded from training because of their origin. The correct reasoning begins with the prohibition of discrimination and reporting through the appropriate channels, not a violent confrontation.

At school, parents want to withdraw their child permanently without providing another authorised form of education. You need to recognise the duty to ensure education and the role of the competent authorities.

In a public service, a service user disagrees with a decision. They can ask for the reasons and use an appeal procedure; threatening the official or damaging the premises is never the compliant response.

The most common traps

  • choosing the harshest answer even though it is not lawful;
  • confusing a personal opinion with the applicable rule;
  • believing that freedom of expression permits anything;
  • answering too quickly without identifying the competent person or institution;
  • favouring a family custom where it conflicts with a fundamental right.

The test does not assess your ability to recite a section of legislation. It checks that you know how to behave in a way compatible with collective life in France.

How to practise without official past papers

Take a knowledge question and turn it into a practical case. For example, after revising equality, devise a situation involving access to employment. After secularism, imagine an interaction in a public service. After institutions, ask yourself where to lodge an appeal.

In a group, ask everyone to explain their choice. A properly explained answer is easier to remember than a ticked letter. Gradually time yourself: the exam allows just over one minute per question, including review time.

Frequently asked questions

Are the scenarios identical for all three exams?

The CSP, resident-card and naturalisation levels have separate syllabuses. Prepare for the category stated on your exam notice.

Can several answers be morally acceptable?

Only one answer is expected. Look for the one that corresponds most precisely to the law and the principle being tested.

Do you need to know the article numbers of legislation?

No. Understand the rules and know how to apply them. The official knowledge list is nevertheless essential.
