Naturalisation: employment integration and income requirements

Employment is assessed as a history, not a tick box

Service-Public describes employment integration as an essential condition of assimilation and integration. The authorities check whether your income is sufficiently stable and allows you to meet the needs of your tax household.

There is no universal rule that “every permanent contract is accepted” or “every fixed-term contract is refused”. The duration, regularity and amount of income, household composition and recent changes are assessed together.

Permanent, fixed-term and temporary contracts

A longstanding permanent contract with regular income is straightforward evidence, but does not guarantee the decision. A probationary period, a low number of working hours or a planned termination may still be examined.

A fixed-term contract or temporary work does not automatically make you ineligible. Show continuity between assignments, renewals, the employment sector and income over several years. A consistent history may be stronger than a permanent contract signed only a few weeks before submission.

Students and recent graduates

Students often have temporary resources and are still establishing themselves professionally. A French diploma can reduce the qualifying residence period under certain conditions, but this reduction does not remove the employment assessment.

After your studies, include the diploma, placements, first contract and prospects. Depending on the circumstances, waiting until the end of a probationary period or until you have several payslips may make the application clearer.

Self-employed workers

For an entrepreneur or liberal professional, the authorities cannot rely on an employment contract alone. Prepare registration records, tax and social-security declarations, financial statements or receipts ledgers, tax notices, business statements and evidence that the activity is sustainable.

A recently formed company must be explained: its business model, clients, turnover and the remuneration actually available to the household.

Present a clear employment history

Unemployment, illness or parental leave

Do not conceal a period without employment. Provide the relevant certificates, benefits statements, job-search records, training evidence or medical documents. The authorities consider the reason, duration, available income and your history before and after the period.

Parental leave or incapacity is not equivalent to a lack of interest in employment integration. Present the family circumstances and household income with the corresponding documents.

What income is considered?

The application generally includes payslips, contracts, tax notices and evidence of other income. Consistency is essential: the amounts declared for tax purposes must be reconcilable with the employment documents.

Savings alone do not necessarily demonstrate employment integration. Benefits, pensions or a spouse’s income are considered in context, without automatically overriding the applicant’s personal circumstances.

Preventing a deferral

Before applying, create a three-to-five-year table showing the employer, contract type, monthly income, periods without activity and an explanation. Identify unexplained breaks, tax or social-security debts and discrepancies between declarations.

If your stability is very recent, compare the benefit of applying immediately with waiting long enough to add several months of evidence. Naturalisation remains a discretionary decision: meeting the minimum conditions does not automatically create a right to a decree.
