ANEF certificates: submission, processing extension and favourable decision

Three documents with similar names but very different effects
After an online residence permit application, ANEF may generate several certificates. Their exact title is decisive. A confirmation of submission does not confer the same rights as a certificate extending the processing period or a certificate of favourable decision.
Open the PDF and read its heading, validity period and statements about employment. A screenshot of the dashboard does not replace the document.
Confirmation of submission
This is generated immediately after the application is sent. It proves that information was submitted, but it is not a temporary residence document. It does not prove lawful immigration status and does not authorise employment.
This limitation is crucial when the previous permit expires. Simply clicking “submit” does not automatically extend every right.
Certificate extending the processing period
When a complete application was submitted within the regulatory deadline, a certificate extending the processing period may be issued. It is a temporary residence document and proves lawful immigration status.
It is valid for a maximum of three months. The prefecture renews it for as long as no decision has been made, provided the conditions are met. Monitor the expiry date: you cannot generate the renewed certificate yourself.
Certificate of favourable decision
After a favourable decision, this temporary certificate confirms approval before the physical card is issued. It proves lawful immigration status. Check the identity details, the type of future permit and the rights stated on it.
Can you work with the certificate?
A confirmation of submission never permits employment. For a processing extension, the answer depends on the procedure.
For a renewal, it permits employment where the permit being renewed already authorised work. For an initial application, only certain categories confer this right, including several officially listed cards bearing the wording “employee”, “temporary worker”, “private and family life” or “job search and business creation”.
Do not ask an employer to interpret the file name: provide the full PDF and verify the category on the official information page.
The right document protects your immigration status and your job
VisaPref reviews the certificate, the dates and the rights associated with your ANEF application.
Travelling with a certificate
The right to stay in France and the right to cross a border are not the same. Before any departure, check the return rules that apply to your nationality, previous permit and type of certificate. A confirmation of submission alone is particularly insufficient grounds for assuming that your return is guaranteed.
Ask the competent authorities for written information before purchasing a non-refundable trip.
What should you do if the certificate expires?
Log in to ANEF, check your notifications and keep a dated screenshot showing that no new document is available. Contact the Citizens' Contact Centre or the prefecture through the stated channel. Include the expiring certificate, the application number, the previous permit and evidence of an urgent issue, such as a suspended employment contract.
If the problem persists and places your immigration status or employment at real risk, appropriate legal action may be necessary.
Summary table
| Document | Temporary residence status | Employment | | -------------------------- | -------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | | Confirmation of submission | No | No | | Processing extension | Yes | Depends on initial application or renewal | | Favourable decision | Yes | Depends on the rights granted |
